چکیده

Documents are often structured, for example into chapters, each with sections, and so on. The representation of structured documents should provide for a focussed retrieval of those components, individual or aggregated, of the documents that are most relevant to an information need. In previous work, we developed a model for the representation and the retrieval of structured documents. This model is based on Dempster-Shafer's theory of evidence. In this paper, we propose an implementation of our model to evaluate its e ectiveness. We are particularly interested in studying whether the representation of aggregated components within the Dempster-Shafer theory allows for focussed retrieval of structured documents. We accomplish a basic implementation so that we can concentrate solely on evaluating the appropriateness of the representation. We carried out a number of experiments which indicate that the use of the DempsterShafer theory in modelling the representation of aggregated components is e ective.

Representing and retrieving structured documents using the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence: modelling and evaluation

In this paper we report on a theoretical model of structured document indexing and retrieval based on Dempster-Shafer's Theory of Evidence. This includes a description of our model of structured document retrieval, the representation of structured documents, the representation of individual components, how components are combined, details of the combination process, and how relevance is capture...

Experimenting on Dempster-Shafer's Theory of Evidence in Information Retrieval

This report describes a set of experiments investigating the use of DempsterSchafer's Theory of Evidence in Information Retrieval. Our experiments use various indexing and retrieval methods to exploit Dempster-Shafers theory and we outline the reasons for the success or failure of the di erent approaches taken.

A Dempster-Shafer Model for Document Retrieval using Noun Phrases

In this paper, we propose a document retrieval system based on natural language processing of documents and queries. We use single terms and term groups as indexing elements to represent documents and queries. The model is formally expressed within the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence. We discuss in detail how we use this theory to represent a document collection, indexing elements, documents...

Dempster-Shafer’s Theory of Evidence applied to Documents: modelling Uncertainty

Documents ojlen display a structure determined by the author, e.g., several chapters, each with several sub-chapters and so on. Taking into account the structure of a document allows the retrieval process to focus on those parts of the documents that are most relevant to an information need. Chiaramella et al advanced a model for indexing and retrieving structured documents. Their aim was to ex...
